hile today many people think of carved shell as being the only true cameos, the earliest cameos were actually carved from hard or precious stones, with glass or shell carvings being considered imitations. Though historians do not know how long men have been making cameos, it is known that they existed by the early Sumerian period (around 3100 BC).
