What is Ivory?
It is a hard, white, opaque substance that is the bulk of the teeth and tusks of animals such as the elephant, hippopotamus, walrus, mammoth and narwhal.

Interesting History...
The word "ivory" was traditionally applied to the tusks of elephants; the word is ultimately from Ancient Egyptian āb, ābu "elephant".

Tip...
Antique Ivory usually darkens to light yellow or brownish color with the years, it takes on a glowing patina and its grain shows clearer and lovelier. Ivory worst 'destroyer' is the sudden draft or temperature change. A little dampness is good for it...so it does not dry out completelly.

Is it Vintage Carved Ivory Or Bone Jewelry? You can test it....

1. The first test one should use when attempting to differentiate between ivory, and bone is to use a magnifying glass or jewelers loop to see what the surface looks like.

2. Bone will have minute pores, which most often appear black or brown after accumulating dirt and contaminents, and will not have lines running through the piece.

3. Resin will be perfectly uniform. Ivory will have "Schreger lines"...most apprarent in elephant ivory. These lines may be cross-hatched as with elephant ivory, or may just appear as circular rings.
