Vintage Carved Scrimshaw Whales Tooth made of resin a Letter Opener with a Whaling Ships and Hunt Scene near icebergs. Other side has a large Flying Fish. Signed J.A.. This whales tooth is very real looking and has very fine detailed carvings/engravings. Engraved handle measures approx. 3-6/8" long by 1-5/8" widest part. Total length: 10-1/4 inches long. Nice patina on a strong metal opener / blade measures approx. 6-1/8". Overall, in good vintage, used condition. Estate Piece.

Scrimshaw Art History: Scrimshaw original pieces remains a cherished form of ancient maritime folk art form whale-men developed by carving designs on whalebone, whale teeth, horns and etc.. The most frequent motif for scrimshaw was the whale. The scenes most often shown are of whaling, especially of ships in full sail or of whales being captured. "The scrimshanders often presented their creations to their wives at home, as a way to be remembered during the long months away. They carved such useful objects as knife handles, hair ornaments, pie crimpers, letter openers, hat pins, toys, games and boat tools".
Scrimshaw is a fine art and the unlike painting, scrimshaw is done on a unique canvas of bone, ivory, etc.. The handcrafting of scrimshaw is part of American heritage. It is the oldest of all North American art forms.
